Estuary toolkit turns the tide

Turning the Tide - An estuaries toolkit for New Zealand communities provides communities and estuary care groups with a complete guide to estuary health. Topics include the history and ecology of estuaries, an estuary ‘warrant of fitness’ check, running community meetings, highlighting areas for future action, seeking funding, and sharing advice and knowledge. There’s also an easy-to-follow guide to creatures of the estuarine mudflat. The kit was prepared by NZ Landcare Trust coordinators Gretchen Robertson and Monica Peters .‘Community input is vital, because science alone can’t substitute for the knowledge communities have on estuaries, and their values and aspirations for them,’ Gretchen says. The 98-page full-colour kit was produced with support from the Ministry for the Environment, the Taieri Trust and Wriggle Coastal Management. Kits cost $25 including postage, and are selling fast.
